It worked so well with the Iranians.
First was Eisenhower and the CIA led by Kermit Roosevelt in operation Ajax (1953), who removed the secular Nationalist Mossadegh from power. Followed in 79 by the foreign policy disaster Jimmy Carter (inadvertently?), who planted the seeds, that set in motion what the Western World has to deal with now.
The USA has done a lousy job as far as Iran is concerned.

What arabic country did we invade and occupy before the 9-11 attacks? What emirate did we occupy when the U.S.S. Cole was bombed? Who woke up who, here?

Very true - but I don't think that is just foreign policy - the US tendency is to do that internally as well

as the tune says - every mothers son can vote, but if that vote does not go the way that we desire, we are free to strap our six-guns on and bravely open fire ....

If you want to revisit ancient history, the road begins in 1953. And we have no more business throwing our weight around in the ME than Iran does of throwing it's weight around in Iowa. So let's let not pretend your little grievance list has its basis on a level playing field. How many of grievances toward Iran took place in our backyard?

It's not what we occupied but it was what we supported that is the alleged contention that justified jihadism prior to 911. Our occupation of Iraq post 911 is partly justified as a result of 911 regardless if Iraq had anything to do with 911. We exacted revenge based on what we were told don't you agree? We were sold this war as if it had something to do with 911; don't tell me it ain't so! Go ask the average Joe six pack and get back with me on this one.
We woke up allright but we ended up pissing in the refrigerator, someone needs to turn the light on and get us off our stupor

You are trying to apply tit-for-tat parameters to recent events. This is an escalation and continuation of a regional struggle for the control of resources that has been brewing for almost a century.

The US, as the primary and most visible Western presence in the Middle East, has inherited the mantle of Western Occupations begun by the British after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire.

Whether right or wrong in our estimation, the missteps of both ourselves and those before us are revisited by by those wanting to foment change of their status quo.

As noted, the US had a hand in the toppling of Iran's legitimate government. We then compounded that error with our unflagging support for the Shah, his secret police, and military, which we trained and armed. Which the Shah financed with oil revenues. Go figure. That any Iranians may have or still do harbor resentment towards the US should not be a surprise.

Continued meddling and incursions on our part only serve to reinforce the perception that 'we' as the visible representative of the West have always been, and still are, only in the ME to exploit the resources and people. Once again, go figure.
