I think there should have been a 3rd option, that of "some combination of the above". I think that is the case and my gut feeling is that there is some sex hormone-triggered period during fetal development.

For example, if there is a predominance of testerone (compared to estrogen and progesterone) when a "male" fetus reaches that determinative point, "he" would have a sexual preference for females (and of course vice versa). The reason for the quotes is that all young human fetuses are female until they develop testicles which are presumably the major source of their testosterone.

I think the jury is still out on this issue, and I'd like to agree with Jayhawk here. As he stated, the American Psychiatric Association declared homosexuality "normal" human behaviour decades ago when I was still a budding psychology student. I disagreed with their decision then, and I still do.

XX versus XY

You raise an interesting point.

XX determines a female and XY determines a male (aka the pairing on the sex chromosomes). When I took genetics (mid-'70s), it was thought that there were no genes on the Y chromosome other than one that determines sex. I have not closely followed the Human Genome Project so I therefore do not know if this is still the case. I do not know how to correlate the sex chromosomes with one's sexual preference, but there may well be some sort of mutation or other aberration.

There are also variances such as XYY (aka super male I think) individuals, and they were thought to be predetermined as criminals in the womb. They shared a few physical characteristcs, but the behavioural ones have since been disproven; I don't know if there are any new and significant clinical studies. If I am not mistaken, Richard Speck (the infamous murderer of several Chicago area nurses back in the '60s) had an XYY configuration. Since he was shown in a homosexual relationship in prison, you might have something here Drewprof!
