A dear friend just bought a V6 mustang...

and I don't know how to react. In my opinion a V6 mustang is a huge no-no. The best thing about the car would be the power of the V8 behind a stick shift. Take that away and you might as well buy something else. It is a decent looking car, but that thrashing John Deere engine is a joke at best.
So now when I get back to Dallas from Asheville on Thursday I will have to fake being enthused when all I really want to say is get some self esteem, or tell him putting a gay bumper sticker on that 'tang convertible would be repetitive. Maybe just buy him a can of V8 tomato juice and walk off? You can tell this isn't going to be pretty, and it is his first new ride ever so I am sure he is going to be sensitive. He knows full well how I feel about this automatic, V6, mustang convertible so he will be on his toes but he wants redemption and I just cannot give it. I could no more drive that type of car than go to a nascar race or watch football all Sunday. I think I will just smile and watch the second hand on my watch and run away before I say something I will regret: Like you are now a genuine bitch, or did you trade in your gonads first, or the worst thing anyone could ever say about any car, HOW CUTE!

A Mustang without a V8 is like a boat without water

Why don't you insist that he trade it in and spring for the difference.

You could do worse in buying an American car than that, but the problem is not just that when you drove it home the first time the neighbors wouldn't know whether you bought a new car, or rented one from Hertz.

Then there is that horrible "Vacuum-with-a-leaky-cannister-sound" emitted by every American 4 or 6 cylinder made in the past twenty years, when you stomp on the passing gear.

And the depreciation on 6 cylinder Mustangs from time immemorial needs no further mention.

Actually my Suburban has been more reliable than ALL the MBs I have ever owned and even more reliable than my Lexus LS430! Its a 2002 with 55K miles on it and bought new. It has NEVER gone to the shop, EVER. Only routine oil changes/maint.

That has been my experience as well, although the '73 450SLC was quite dependable overall, and that is the one we owned for over 20 years. I cannot say anything bad about mercedes from my experience, and they build a nicely balanced machine from a driver/reliability standpoint. The recent depreciation is abysmal.
