My old dear drives a discovery TD5. Absolutely loves it to bits, I have to admit they are great cars, never ever had a problem with them whatsoever.
Although im stupidly biased... so i'd say save a few tens-of-grands and buy a Merc T-Series 7 seater, hahahah.

Older Toyota Land Cruiser/Lexus LX indeed or Ford Bronco of '94 to '96 vintage with the 351 cu in. Who needs the headache of something less dependable? G wagon is a good alternative too but still has some dpereciating left to do. Current ML is nice as well but still depreciating like a brick in steaming silly putty.

Unfortunately all Land Rover products in the U.S came with the ex-buick V8. They were never offered with the diesels. I would have picked up a 300TDI in a minute if they were around 30+ MPG out of a Discovery......wow

It is possible to get a Disco converted to the 300TDI but the expense really isn't worth it if your just trying to improve your fuel economy as it would take you many years to pay back.

Occasionally, G-wagens become available here in the states, equipped with the venerable OM603.96 engine, which is just about the only version I'd bother to purchase. I've seen them on Ebay, and apparently several importers specialize in these and other 300GD models.

But then again, why do you think you need an offroad-type vehicle like these specified? As has been mentioned, if you just "need" 4wd capability and some extra room, why not consider a T-model w/4-matic?

A diesel G would defiantly be suitable as well. Decent ones are hard to come by and I haven't' seen one for sale in my area for some time.
