Happy Birthday Bull!

The other stock market thread is getting a little long in the tooth, so I thought I'd start a new one in honor of the fifth anniversary of this bull market.

Bull rides into fifth anniversary - USATODAY.com

The bull market, which turns 5 today, is the fifth-longest bull market since World War II. Since the dark days of October 2002 when the worst bear market since the Great Depression ended, the stock market has enjoyed an upward run that created $10 trillion in shareholder wealth, says Wilshire Associates. "It's been an amazing five years," says Jonathan Steinberg, CEO of WisdomTree Asset Management, "even with the volatility."

Monday, the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index eased 5 points to 1553 from its record close Friday, leaving it 99.9% higher than when the bull market began. And while the 1982-87 run peaked 13 days after its fifth anniversary, analysts say several powerful factors favor this bull's longevity, including: powerful corporate earnings, a global boom, and a resurgence of tech and Internet leaders.

I am still very optimistic and will remain so until the next (mc)bear market begins. I can see the possibility of a ten- or 20-year bull market in the making. Cross your fingers...

Huh? Crossing your fingers for a bull market is like sticking your finger in the dike; it's going to have virtually no effect unless you're thinking of the nebulous "butterfly" effect.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)
