That will be a fun trip. Try to fix a walk up from Venice Beach along the boardwalk, preferably at a weekend (which is cool) to Sta. Monica and have a couple of pints in the King's Arms. If you drink enough or whatever fast enough to get a buzz on, stepping out of there into the palm trees and California is quite surreal. Go on further up PCH by car and visit Gladstone's for Fish 'where Sunset meets the ocean' and have a LI iced tea and the clam chowder. Sit outside and you're as good as on the beach.

Must sees would include all the "normal" touristy things, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Chrysler Building, Ground Zero (unless you're Ahmadinejad they'll let you visit) etc. If you like TV, watching a taping of The Late Show is lots of fun, contact CBS NOW to try and get tickets. Central Park, the theatre district, Washington Square, the ports, 5th Avenue, Rockefeller Center, the ice rink, the museums (MOMA is a big attraction), Greenwich Village, man, ten days is not enough.
so says Frisco kid .

But then again, tourist's advice is the best advise for the fellow tourist.

Personally, I find Empire State Bldg waaaaay overrated and a ripoff. You might end up spending three hours in a queue (time that can be spent doing something more meaningful) or spend another $40 or so you could jump the queue. Having been to the top floors of WTC many times (some of them courtesy of 9/11 victim @ Cantor Fitzgerald ), the observatory @ the Empire State just does not compare.

I highly recommend the UN tour.

When I used to live by the Seaport and worked at West Village, I used to walk to work, covering TriBeCa or Chinatown/Little Italy (depending on which route I took), SoHo, Village and then to work. Many attractions, if grouped by areas, can be walked from one part to another in the NYC.

If you're lucky, you might be able to share a table with Julianne Moore (my fave - for she used to say hi to our group since we met so often) having lunch at Florent at the Meatpacking district.

Another overrated venue. But then again, worth a peek for one-time visitor. Food sucks there so order a Bistro Burger from Louie @ the Corner Bistro from up the street and a pint of McSorley's, then say hello to Sandra or Mike at Tavern on Jane, then make a quick stop at the White Horse Tavern.

Keep walking downtown and you'll find Walkers, the 'Ear' Bar and Odeon. Get another pint or two at the first two, then neutralize it with Odeon's upscale greasy spoon dish.

Hey, my blurry-eyed visit was nearly twenty years ago, and it was the shit back then--food was not what we had in mind. I vaguely remember the cab ride back to East Orange was a sphincterrific journey into the bowels of terror--fucking cabbies.
