Next big hurdle will be getting CONGRESS to push the NHTSA and DOT to realize that the folks in Europe knows how to build safe cars without US Nanny standards attached and to allow them into the country NOW. Expedite the import process and quit with the silly headlight/windshield/turn indicator/rebar bumper/crap.
Which would pretty much mean the end of Ford/GMC/Chrysler. If the trend towards more economical cars continues and the flood gates were opened to other European manufactures the big three wouldn't cease to exisit but it would take them years to catch up. Now it should be noted that both Ford and GM make cars specifically for the European market. They just don't seem to work very well here. Anyone remember the Caddilac Catera? If you want to save oil then take the bus or a cab, or buy a used car. Just do not buy a new car that takes tons of energy and OIL to manufacture all the pieces and design energy as well as the export and maintenance issues. Also do not buy a car that will be useless on a cost/run basis in 10 years. I applaud the ongoing technology, I despise the narrow minded pride of those who cannot see beyond the immediate hypocrisy.
And this is why, besides my towing truck which is "only" 8 years old, my newest car is a 1993. No manufacturing time or energy required to build. They use more energy to run but the total footprint is much less.

Not really because when you look at Global Ownership of car companies and interwoven partnerships, opening up the market might stifle some of the initial US built cars as the Global arms sort through new regulations but look at GM as an example with Holden, Vauxhall, Opel, part of Fiat, and Daewoo. All most would have to do is move product across without mods, instead of the Billions required for cross platform changes now required.
When GM brought the GTO over from Australia from Holden, it cost over a $Billion to retool for the US market when it should have required minimal changes.
Ford's Focus, Mondeo, Ka and other platforms are the same. Hits in Europe, can't be shipped here without very high costs.
Here is a generalized rant: Prius owners are ASSHOLES. They think stop signs do not exist. They are smug and conceited, and if another one runs the stop sign by my house I am going to ram it with my jeep.
PS You look like a monkey fucking a football in most of those cars.
Don't know about the monkey part, but especially true in so. Cal. The dickheads weaving in and out of traffic (and the car pool lanes) at 80+ mph are disproportionately Prius drivers. I dunno why, but it's not my imagination.
