Most Exciting Pennant Race in Baseball History?

With three days left in the regular season, seven National League teams still have a chance to make four playoff spots, and none are yet guaranteed a spot. The team with the best record in the NL, Arizona, finishes the season at Colorado, which is currently riding an eleven-game winning streak. Fun stuff if you have a dog in this hunt!

^ Yup -- someone who gets it. And that is why the NL is better than the AL, and college hoops is better than the NBA. It isn't just about talent and athleticism.

I've not been excited about anything baseball since the 1994 strike. I'm one of the fans they didn't get back and with this steroid issue up front in everyone's faces, I'm surprised anyone would carry water for such a tainted sport. I liken today's baseball to WWE's smackdown. A bunch of orchestrated horseshit.

I understand your feelings. I don't concur, but you're certainly not alone. In any case, "A bunch of orchestrated horseshit" is going a bit far. If you believe this pennant race has been orchestrated by the powers that be, I believe you are deluding yourself. And if you believe that steroid use is/was more prevalent in baseball than other American sports, you're flat-out wrong.

Damn, mitch, you've got strong opinions on every issue. Doesn't life get tiresome sometimes?

I must say I was disillusioned with the 1994 strike right after following the Phillies during the entire 1993 season (a Philly resident at the time), and let Sosa-Mcguire homerun chase go by in relative indifference, but take pleasure in triumphs as well - for me, they were World Series from 1996, 2001, and 2004.

Whatever the case, I agree with GS that if you accuse just MLB for the ills of professional sports, then you might as well cancel cable/satellite subscription to all sports at virtually all levels.

The Vince Lombardi ethos has thoroughly permeatead in all aspects of American life and poisened it into ultra-competitive society where players, coaches, owners and whoever involved in anything, be they sports or otherwise, would take any means to win.

If you haven't seen Nine Innings From Ground Zero (HBO), highly, highly recommended. I watched it again about a week ago with my 13 yo daughter (forced it on her as an educational experience), and she was riveted by the sense of personal impact from the 9-11 event, which as a child, she had probably never considered before.

I certainly struck a nerve, there. I never, in my post, implied that baseball was the only sport in which steroid use was prevalent. It was just the only sport I got into and Tom Glavine and his shoulder to shoulder shitheads fucked it all up. Also, if you think Pete Rose was the only manager/ baseball exec to bet on baseball and put themselves into positions that would allow them to 'rig' line-ups, you are just as delusional. Petie boy just got caught. I guess, on this, we can agree to disagree, have a drink and a steak, and move on.
