I will ask a fellow I play tennis with occasionally. He sold his Toyota Dealership 2 years ago
what the current situation on this is.
here is his response:
"There is a free trade agreement between Canada & the US..Mexico as well on North American made products, cars & trucks included.
Some auto manufactures do import from Japan & Europe.
Toyota Honda Nissan do bring in Japanese made products i.e.. my new 08 Toyota RAV is made in Japan, And I end up paying 6% more than a US buyer on the tax alone. That's unfair to me and the rest of the RAV buyers.
There was a previous campaign about this, saying the $1800.00 import duty, 6% of $30,000 average Canada price vehicle could well be spent on a new stove or fridge or........? And not going to the government coffers.
These Japanese made models & European made also are subject to 6% import duty when entering Canada. That accounts for some of the price differential.[Put in place to protect the Canadian auto manufactures]
The US has a similar duty only it's 2%......free enterprise thinking..........
The gentleman (jlomon) is right, as a Toyota Dealer we were forbidden to sell to a US buyer. We were subjected to a huge fine from Toyota Canada for doing so.
It's truly nonsense, we bought Toyota product from Toyota Canada Inc., they made their money, we made money on the sale to a US buyer.
The US buyer in turn made money on the vehicle he bought from me. That's true free enterprise.
Now it's Canadas turn to save on purchasing vehicles form the US. I say that's free enterprise........
It's a disgrace the price we pay for cars & trucks in Canada, way more than our US counter parts." (end of quote)
So the question remains, how can the average consumer, change these unjust
policies. Right now this afternoon there is a 3 hr wait at the US border where Canadian
shoppers are eager to spend their new at par dollars in US border towns like Bellingham
and Seattle. Thats great for those US border businesses that still offer products such as TV's, Stereos, Gasoline, Computer products etc, still at far lower cost then their Canadian
counterparts can offer right now. While at the same time the Canadian retailer is getting hurt as well because He or She is not allowed to lower the price because of some Giant manufacturer thats dictating the terms of sale.
All of this SUCKS bigtime!, these trade rules are not setup for you or me. They are setup for
large multi-national corporations, who in tern hire lobby firms that provide the money
to elect the next batch of "in your pocket politicians" that end up dictating the
terms of how you and I will spend our after tax dollars. Provided there is any left after the
ARM crisis. Large corporations don't give a S**T how the US or Canadian consumer make out . They have rigged the rules for their advantage.
