About-Face - Now the media is turning ground and is now in a full fledge debate, GOOD. The university president just did a press confrence saying it is now under thier own investigation of which they want to see if they could continue to create an environment that nutures such debate. Lets see I will try my best to follow what happens, but I doubt I have time....but it looks like things are heading in the right direction.

Here is a Use of Force Continuum McBear. This is pretty similar to most departments. His resistance justified the use of the taser(if they have similiar policies)

Also, there is a difference in using force on a person who has been in a car theft and foot pursuit and one who has been disorderly at a political speech.

In the past, talk would have dropped this conversation to a level of cooperation. The second the first officer grabbed the protester, the officer lost control of the situation. That was the failure. Human nature took over. In a perfect world the protester would automatically submit but human nature does not always allow that to occur. You know that red mist keeps that from happening. It is up to the person in charge [police at this point] to keep the situation from escalating. They failed. Tazing was an inappropriate action, as was the swarm.

My understanding is that Tazing is used when a person is dangerous or an officer fears for their safety and needs controlled. At no time was this guy dangerous, disobedient yes, dangerous never. Discipline is the job of the judge, not a cop with a taser.

I really respect the work cops do, and know it is very stressed work but as a group I have seen their reputation drop greatly over the past couple of decades. Respect for the profession by much of society has lessened dramatically because of incidents like this where overreaction clouds an otherwise innocuous situation.
You really should talk w/ a publisher of children's books and fairy tales... You give that kid way too much respect and the cops way to little. That punk set the whole thing up so that he would get busted on camera and he couldn't settle for anything less than a loud and boisterous confrontation w/ the police. And as far as the "tase," I believe that was exactly what he wanted and needed to make the national news. Did you hear him scream "Don't tase me bro! Don't tase me..." and then he pushed it to the point where the officers had no choice but to do it. He was totally and deliberately out-of-control. I would be willing to bet serious $$$ that the punk had even scripted it on paper and storyboard before he entered the room. And all the idiots in the world just jumped on his bandwagon w/out thought because it was that "poor boy against the big bad cops..." What a bunch of losers!

Thanks, that is a keeper. Is there not a delineation between Resistive levels where you have so many subjective variables from "peace activist to car thief" or "protest marcher to lady in wheelchair"?

I will keep it in mind on those occasions that, as Ron White says "I have the Right to Remain Silent, Just not the Ability".

As for the childrens' book publisher, Lorainne from BWI will be at my house Saturday, does that help.

I don't know the kid's motives, nor does anyone else. I only go by what I saw on the video. I have only commented on the escalation of police action against someone who's only crime had been, up until the escalation, loudly asking a question at a political rally. Was he smart, NO. Did this get blown out of proportion YES. Was tazing necessary, not if everyone had been thinking. EVERYONE.

He got exactly what he wanted to get free publicity for his blog and Website, and I can't understand why you insist on defending him and putting down the police. To state that "... the only crime had been, up until the escalation, loudly asking a question at a political rally" is just plain fair tail! He had ignored several lawful commands to stop and step down, he resisted the lawful actions of the police and several others at the rally, and he then resisted arrest, provoked police officers, tried to incite a riot, and a number of other things--any one of which would have been reasonable grounds to tase his ass. The only reason I regret the police action is because they played right into his grubby little hands and in turn gave him the free national media coverage he so desperately sought.

I wasn't being insensitive to the old woman in the wheel chair. I just find your lame attempts to defend your indefensible position on so many issues laughable! Where is that damn violin anyway?
