Reno 411

Hey fellas,

I was wondering if any of you could provide any insight on life in Reno, NV. Ive lived in southern/central California throughout my entire existance and recently received a job offer in mini sin city. Ive never been to Reno but plan on making a journey there in the coming few weeks. Ive been doing a bit of research and from what I can tell it doesn't seem so bad. From what I've gathered, the cost of living is about 10% cheaper compared to where I currently live and there's no state income tax to boot. The demographics seem suitable and the city seems to be growing at a nice pace. The housing market seems pretty slow but I'll likely be renting during the first year anyway. There was mention of a bit of a meth problem (can't be any worse than living in Kern County) but crime seemed to be relatively low. I heard it gets pretty windy throughout the year and receives a bit of snow in the winter. If anyone could provide their experiences with the city, I would greatly appreciate it.

Regards,
Chris

"The biggest little city in the world" is its motto

The Nevada state seal should have a craps table on it.

Reno is defined by gambling. The casinos and hotels are its heart.

It is close to the ski areas if you are into the winter sports, and culturally equal or better than Bakersfield, and has some decent German Auto mechanics around to keep your car in good shape.

It has a natural smog inversion layer, unfortunately.

One can dine very well and get plenty of value so long as they don't gamble.

And long term residents tell you, if you haved a propensity to gambling addication, it is a VERY bad place to live.

The Lake Tahoe attractions are nearby, and the attractions of Carson City, Virginia City, Minden and Gardnerville beckon. The latter cities have attracted Basque sheepherders over time, and there are some excellent Basque restaurants around.

There are definate seasons you will notice, but all in all it is not too bad.

About 15 miles east of town, is a large and legal whorehouse known as the "Mustang Ranch" which is another roadside attraction (for some)

Two yearly events of some reknown are the Reno Air Races, and the Hot August Nights, the latter being an enormous car show event with thousands of pre-1982 American muscle cars, classics and hot rods showing up

Thank you for your input. I enjoy occasional gambling but feel I can keep it under control. I bet that's what they all say though so I will definitely be keeping myself in check.

The presence of decent German Auto mechanics definitely makes me feel better as I was wondering how my car was going to fare. I don't know that I will have the luxury of owning a garage at first so if you remember/know of any places, feel free to drop some names.

I have heard quite a few good things regarding the dining experiences and look forward to trying out a few on my maiden voyage. Any recommendations?

The Lake Tahoe attractions speak for themselves and are definitely a plus.

It's funny, almost everyone I ask seems to mention Mustang Ranch and their comments usually end with something to the affect of "Ive never been there, but that's what Ive heard" haha.

I did hear they have definite seasons, and I was a little concerned with the snow. Ive never lived anywhere that snows so I'm not sure what to expect.

I heard they have weekly entertainment events throughout the summer so that's a plus and I've been wanting to make it to Hot August Nights for some time now.

I'm starting to feel better and better about the opportunity. Again I thank you for your feedback and if anyone else would like to chime in, please do so.
