Part of the reason for disquiet about this case (at least in the UK) is the publicity surrounding this . The publicity surrounding this case has been very high profile, involving the Pope and the UK prime minister as well as much media coverage, all initially of the 'find the child' type.
As evidence had emerged (such as it is) that casts some doubt on the initial coverage, the press is becoming rather more questioning.
The consensus appears to be moving towards a perception that this case is not as simple as was originally thought, rather than specific allegations.
D's joke was of doubtful taste, though probably one of the less offensive versions that abounds. It wasn't libellous or malignant. It will neither help nor hinder resolution. Nothing to get upset about, really.
