Not Benzes, still cars though. Opinions please........

Right, I'm not trading in the 140 but I need a new car for work because my Avensis, (absolutely ghastly contraption), goes back in 7 or 8 months. I'm gonna choose I think from the following list for my ride for the next three years. I need some opinions good and bad if any body has experience of them.
Reliability and corrosion are not issues here as it's not mine.

1. Volkwagen Golf 1.9TDi SE Estate. (simply here because it's the benchmark car for me). £ No lease cost available for this model yet.
2. Vauxhall Astra 1.9CDTi 8v Design Estate. (this is also on the benchmark list). £672/month
3. Mercedes B180CDI SE. (Only cos its a Merc, I hate MPVs really this is just one of the better looking ones). £720/month
4. Alfa Romeo 1.9JTDM Sportwagon . (cos its beautiful) £774/month.
5. Fiat Bravo Dynamic 1.9 multijet. (cos its cheap). £628/month.
6. BMW 120d. (cos its quite good value and has a little bit of kudos). £711
7. Nissan Qashqai Acenta dCi. (its cheap and different) £641/month.
8. Saab 9-3 1.9TiD Airflow 150. (nolease cost for this either yet but I just quite like it).

What are your verdicts?

Go with the Alfa in lieu of your inability to drive a Volvo like TK.

^^^^^

TK is Thrillkill (or Thrillhouse to his mates) He drives a Volvo 18 wheeler and in Shane's world, size is everything.

Anyway, heart says Alfa, head says VW-that would be as an owner. I've never leased so I'm not sure how residuals and servicing come into the picture.

I had a Lancia once as a company car. Great car to drive but I wouldn't have owned it for all the tea in China.

My 'other' car is a Saab 9-3 - a hoot to drive. Many of the same "quality" attributes as MB in my opinion. Still quite solid and trouble free at 125K. I like it.

Wait a minute! Gumsie, those are monthly prices of around $US1200-1400 by my calculation. Do they include a Euro girlfriend or something?

^ He's probably a chav - lives in a hovel, because that's all he can find open that's affordable, and needs a flashy way to incinerate the rest of his income.

WHAT, NO BURBERRY UPHOLSTERED CADILLACS FROM WHICH TO CHOOSE, GUMSIE?

The list he proposed is comprised of modern, direct injection Diesels that are not available in the United States. The only Diesel brand cited that US drivers may have an idea about is the VW, although I am not clear that particular car is sold here.

So, recommending gasoline powered alternates probably won't be of much help.

So, what is the mileage for each of these candidates, and what are your needs? They look like MPVs and wagons or at least hatches. And they seem pretty damned expensive. Why no Toyota?

Of the list, it would be the VW or the Alfa for me. Jim
