Portraiture

Against my better judgement, I decided to share this image. I was experimenting with the D200 using B&W images, flash, etc., and got what I thought to be a very good result without using studio equipment. Sadly, you won't get the full impact of the image because I exported it at 600x400, but it's now my wallpaper and I for one love it.

I cringingly await your harsh & honest commentary.

Nothing to cringe at there. It's an extremely well composed, illuminated and exposed image. You should consider photography as a hobby!

By any reasonable measure, it is an excellent shot, QBN.

I'm fairly certain that I would take 60 shots (what did we do before digital cameras?) before I would take a photo approaching that one. I would suggest photo quality paper in the printer and a dark cherry (maybe black leather) frame before you lose it to the dusty corners of the hard drive when you replace that computer.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Great shot, Cuban. And I agree with Dig, it would have taken many shots and hours in the darkroom to get a print like that back in the day. Congrats on the shot and the lad.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

I've definitely considered getting it printed, just not sure of the size I want to use.

The D200 has done more to help me understand photography in the 9 months I've owned it than I could have ever afforded with film. I took about 70 shots in all, just trying different things - the instant feedback is invaluable. I'd love to have an actual studio, but it's neat to know you can get good results without much more than iPhoto, a simple flash, and an 8' tall set of 2" wood blinds in white.

Shot looks real good. I like the composition and balance.

Are you using any digital darkroom software like Lightroom? I am digging into it and starting to get the feel I had back when I had a color darkroom back in the 80s running at the time a state of the art Phillips PCS130/150 color enlarger system and I am finding that Lightroom replicates all of the functions of darkroom work except the chemical burns.

I have not posted any up yet as I am now playing in extremes to get a feel but it looks real promising.
