When In Doubt, What Guides You?

As a branch from the "Ahem" thread, I think it would be endlessly educational to see what Presidential candidates, congressmen, etc. on down to BWOT regulars provided in response to this question:

Of all the principles, doctrines, mantras, etc. in the world that are greater than any individual, to which do you submit yourself?

Is it a W.W.J.D. bracelet? The Bible? The COTUS? The Qu'ran? Napoleon Hill? "Good to Great"? What is your source of decision support? What do you turn to when in doubt?

I archived the writings of KamiL, and had a friend print them on fine cotton cloth. I then had the cloth made into boxer shorts.
So, in a way, I too look down there for guidance.....

Since I like this as a real topic and would like to know what others use, I'm game.

Since I was brought up in a Southern Baptist environment I have that pretty much hardwired in the back of my head. I am still recovering from that.

I am also an Eagle Scout so there is always the basic tenants of the Scouts. "On my honor I will do my best..." and "Be Prepared"

About 10 years ago I made a list of things, based on a question much like this. I have a copy in my wallet and a copy on the wall in my office. I have posted it here before.

Kindergarten: Color between the lines but use any color you want.
Father [union rep for Butcher's Worksman Union]: There is Legal and there is Right. Always do what is RIGHT.
Scoutmaster: Always keep a good knife.
SWAMP : Change your socks at every chance. Only shoot at a known target.
Bob Bondurant: Look where you are going, not where you are.
Firearms Instructor: Do not pull a gun unless you intend to fire, do not fire unless you intend to kill.
Lou Gerstner [ Former CEO of IBM during the first meeting at my first contract with IBM] Advise the client as if their entire business was taking care of your parents.
Scouts: On my HONOR, I will do my best...
BE PREPARED!

I use those guidelines daily. I use them in presentations and in mentoring. I have also developed one that really comes from those and my years of doing things just slightly different than most. It is the one that I pass on most as I think it matters.

Society is only as good as it treats those among us that have the least.

That is what guides me.

^ This question digs a bit deeper than that...for example, what if doing the "right" thing is illegal, would alienate some loved ones, but serve the greater good? What if failing to do the "right" thing, while defensible in and of itself, means you fail to live up to the expectations of your children - or of yourself?

Some of us may be lucky enough to never encounter a thorny, emotional, complicated situation where we're damned if we do and we're damned if we don't. But what if you did encounter such a situation? Surely there's no comfort in sticking with a "logical deduction" if it means you violate the trust of a spouse, a child, a client, a life-long friend, or your family...

For me, the answer is simple -- the EPC, of course.

"If spending money you don't have is the height of stupidity, borrowing money to give it away is the height of insanity." -- anon
