As an old Eagle Scout I can't imagine going anywhere without a pocket knife. I have carried one since I was 10.
And now we have this. A Felony for having a Swiss Army Knife in his car console.
I mourn the loss of Common Sense in this fine Country.
Wheeler student suspended for having knife

A Wheeler High School student has been suspended for 10 days and charged with a felony for carrying a weapon onto the campus.
According to an arrest warrant, Wilford Ray Chandler Jr. had a pocket knife with a 2.5-inch blade on Aug. 29, a violation of the school district's weapons policy.
Jay Dillon, a Cobb schools spokesman, said Chandler left the Wheeler campus about midday — a violation of the school's rules. When he came back onto the grounds, a school resource officer searched him and his car, which is standard operating procedure when a student leaves campus without permission.
The blade, described in the warrant as a "multipurpose-type pocket knife," was found in the center console of the car.
"He left campus when he wasn't supposed to, and he acknowledged that," Dillon said.
The district's zero tolerance policy dictates that a blade longer than 2 inches gets an automatic 10-day suspension and criminal charges. Smaller blades get a 5-day suspension and may result in criminal charges, Dillon said.
Last year, "dozens" of weapons were found in Cobb schools, he said.
Dillon noted that on Friday a Pebblebrook High School student stabbed another student on campus. That student, a juvenile whose name was not released, was suspended and charged with bringing a weapon to school, aggravated battery and aggravated assault.
The injured student, also a juvenile, was OK, Dillon said.
Come on, Mac...even for being among the "shades of gray" crowd, you must admit that 2.5" is HUGE as knives go.
If you're walking into the woods or working outdoors, or even need one for your *job*, having a pocket knife is no big deal. There's absolutely no reason for a student to bring any kind of knife with them to school. Show me a school that doesn't have X-ACTO's, or scissors, or whatever they'd need to cut things during any kind of lesson....
Can you imagine if he had a disposable razor. Especially the new one with 5 blades...would that get him expelled for the year? Would that be five 1" blades, or one 5" blade?

He could get life under Californias 3 time loser law and yet have 2 more charges in case they find a cure for death.

I believe he had it in his car. I have a box of some serious tools in my car at times, and my kid has one in his car almost all the time. I am sure there are a few tools in either box that would make the 2.5" Swiss Army Knife blade look like Crocodile Dundee's assailant's knife compared to "This is a knife!" Dundee's. The point being the car is not the same as his pocket, and technically, having a car is likely a lot more dangerous than a knife of any size if he was inclined to try to kill someone. I also have a hard time understanding the logical basis for 2.5" vs. 2.0 inches. Seems to me you either allow Swiss Army knives, or their knock offs, or you don't allow any knives, at all, in anyone's pockets.
Lets see, I don't have a knife in my car but there are certainly other things that could be used as weapons.
Fire extinguisher "Blunt Object"
Spare Serpentine belt "Strangulation device"
Lug nut wrench "Blunt object #2"
Pens/pencils "Stabbing devices"
Car Itself, "Battering ram"

He didn't bring it to school, it was in his car. And 2.5" is the smaller Swiss Army Knife.
