I think there are a number of reasons the President went to al-Anbar Province. Here are a couple:
  • It is our show-case success story in Iraq where the Sunni people rose-up and attacked al-Qaeda and helped us win the hearts and minds of the people there. The President probably wanted to reinforce them for their support.
  • To a large extent, the setting was the message: Bringing al-Maliki, a Shiite, to the heart of mostly Sunni Anbar province was intended to show the administration's war critics that the beleaguered Iraqi leader is capable of reaching out to Sunnis, who ran the country for years under Saddam Hussein.

That is exactly why he went where he did. It just happens to be the largest secure base in Iraq. al Maliki didn't get within 5 miles of a Sunni civilian.

Problem is, BAGHDAD is where the problems are and where the heart of the conflict is. If he wanted to show support for al Maliki, he would stand by him there, at the Iraqi Congress, or in the plaza bazaar [where the Surge is working].

You must be that turd in al Maliki's pocket. You obviously know more than the President of the United Stats. Why don't you tell us who will win the War on Terror...

I doubt that war will ever end so long as people keep breeding.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
