I'm Old School KRN 9124 from 1964 with a 5 channel Johnson Messenger 1. Upgraded to the "Blackface" Johnson Messenger 2 in 67. Had to by both send and receive crystals. I still have both transceivers.

I think you would really love the book "Two Roads to Dodge City" a wonderful travel story by Adam and Nigel Nicholson, from the '80s, a story of a British father and son who set out from different places (Los Angeles & the East coast) to travel around America separately, writing letters to each other as they go, recording their impressions of the country, and meet one another at the end.

One buys an old red 1973 Pontiac Catalina convertible (very much like your '72 Olds) for $900 from a Hollywood couple "whose liberalism died a bloody death" and the other rents a new Thunderbird and they set off, to meet in Kansas at journey's end.

It one of the best descriptions of American culture I have ever read, from a unique English view point, the author from Sissinghurst Castle, and a family rife with upper class scandal (Vittoria Sackville-West, etc.)

I believe you'd enjoy it quite a lot. The description of Hugh Hefner's party at the Playboy Mansion in Hollywood is a classic

Yeah, I will look into that when I get a moment. Incidently, have you read any Bill Bryson? Sort of the opposite, an American who came to Uni. here and stayed until quite recently. 'Notes from a small island' I think you would enjoy. His 'A short history of nearly everything' is a real page-turner too.

That's pretty cool-only just noticed it! Couldn't make the pieces rotate though.

Hey thanks, for the tip, but yeah, "Notes From A Small Island", I read it years ago, enjoyed it immensely, and it got me interested in his writing, enough to read other books of his, though
"Short History of Nearly Everything" I haven't picked up, yet...

He's from Iowa, originally, too, sort of the opposite of "GUAGE" , who apparently also hails from that moderately benighted and utterly boring state.

I'd heard that Bill Bryson causes the odd eyebrow to be raised, over on the "Island".....

Not that I am aware. I think he is considered to be a 'treasure'-certainly all his books sell exceedingly well. He's a very bright guy, so according to nature's love of balance, guage should hail from Iowa!

In 2004 he won The Aventis Prize for science writing (ASHONE) and was invited to speak at The Royal Society. He was like a dog with two dicks, by all accounts!
