A dangerous cocktail: Politics and the war on terror

The USA Today ran a full-page commentary in The Forum section featuring liberal Bob Beckel and conservative Cal Thomas agreeing that we should keep politics out of The War on Terror. I really wish the kookbergers on this board would join the club!

"Democrats don't want to expose this country to terrorists, and Republicans don't want to trample Americans' civil liberties. Sure, policy differences will happen — especially when such grave issues are before us — but Cal and Bob agree that we can't afford to let politics eclipse national security. We are, after all, at war."

The problem however, is if lefties were to take their anti-war, anti-military, anti-Bush, anti-everything rhetoric out of the War on Terror, they would not know what to say.

So now, after six years of using the War on Terror as a political tool, it all goes sour, and now they whine like the bitches they are over anyone else doing the same. Such girlie men.

I have some difficulty describing the desire of the American people for some straight talk on the "war on terror" from our President, which is universally met with obfuscation and slogans of spin as injecting politics into the "war on terror."

Maybe you guys can do it for him, since you seem so close to the spin machine. for starters, when did Congress declare we were at war? Seems to me we need to at least define who the enemy is, how we intend to convince him to stand down, and how we determine the "war" is over before we are asked to give up any of the liberties and rights in the Constitution. The same with abusing our troops.

If in fact, as I suspect, we have not declared war, it would be much more accurate to stop telling the American people we "are at war" and thereby imply all kinds of powers and Constitutional compromises that might be appropriate if Congress had declared war should be ceded to the executive branch indefinitely with no means to determine when these "at war" special provisions should be terminated.

The facts are, no one thought this out past the next CNN report starting with Shock and Awe and going all the way through today. This administration has engaged America in something horridly wrong out of pure incompetence and weak moral character. It is commonly taught to defense contractors that malpractice is rarely a case of purposeful sabotage - instead it is a result of employees being tasked to perform above their abilities. They can't keep up and they therefore take short cuts, with potentially fatal consequences. The same model fits the Bush administration. Covering up the failures, at the expense to American and Iraqi citizens with political spin, purposeful misstatement of facts, and deception is criminal.

To express concern with a President whose policies have led the country down a path where America has lost the goodwill so many American troops and civilians have invested their lives in for more than two centuries, lost her position of high ground in human rights around the world, is not politicizing the "war on terror." There is no "war on terror," just an immoral invasion of Iraq as part of a half baked political strategy to win Republican Party Congressional seats and Presidencies (as applicable) in the 2002, 2004 and 2006, and as many elections thereafter where the fear manipulation of Americans might work. Calling for an end to the war, and recognizing the policy to date for the failure that it is should be recognized for what it is - being honest. But we know that is a rare commodity in this Administration. Jim

I think the war was declared on us, and the "obfuscation and slogans of spin" you mention come from you and your ilk--like the democrat Congress. Is it any wonder you, and they, are going down in flames?

I love it when liberals find it necessary to go ON AND ON with their lengthy explanations and rationalizations. Paragraph after paragraph of emotion based nonsense.
