I had a bulky portable Panasonic with 3 W output, if I remember correctly.
Portable phones were pretty rare then.

Garage
Then the drug lords took over the pay phones and you could only call out. You could not get a call back.

Back in the day, I knew of a special prefix that if you picked up the handset, dial the prefix followed by the last 4 digits of that particular phone, then hang up at the right moment, the phone would shoot out all coins it had in the box.
Good times.

I was just about to ask that. Ever since I could remember the NY pay phones have been 35 cents to start and a nickle every 3 minutes, or something like that. I remember when you can give some one a pay-phone number and have them call you right back. They caught on to that and stopped incoming calls.

Way back in the day - you could dial a local number just by pressing the "on hook" switch the sequence of numbers you were dialing ........
