Surprise surprise: they represent the people. At the heart of it all is a need for serious structural change in the US system of government. The main reason Congress is so ineffective is that they have steadily given away their power to the President for the last sixty years, to the point that Bush and Cheney have been able to push the Executive Branch into fascism. They are able to do it because of ambiguity in the Constitution on War Powers, oversight and "executive privilege". The only counter to all of this is a two-thirds majority in Congress able to pass amendments to the COTUS defining what executive privilege is so the President can no longer hide his actions from Congress, and an amendment strictly defining the war powers of the President and Congress. It is the main reason I am hoping Democrats get a landslide into the Congress, and Ron Paul wins the presidency. It is probably the only way it is going to happen. Otherwise, we are all doomed to politics as usual forever. Once again, the people have gotten the government it has voted for.
The first few sentences are more of the same bullshit that makes me twitch with resentment when I hear it from the Republican apologists on this board. It is a variation of Condoleeza Rice's "who could have known?" refrain after every fuck-up.
There is no
excuse for rushing a piece of shit legislation that hands greater power to a man the Congress has spent 8 months vilifying, with great success as he has proven to be an untrustworthy, lying, piece of shit in that 8 months and given no indication he is going to behave any differently in the future, because they want to go on vacation. Or are afraid of a President with a 30% or less approval rating. The Democrats are to blame. So are the people who selected them as candidates and then those who elected them.
I agree some fixes are in order and without an overwhelming majority, the present polarized political climate will make any substantial changes impossible.
But this last act of cowardice by the Democrats, who could have ensured no bill was brought forward that empowered Gonzales to further rape the Constitution, or demanded Gonzales resign because he is proven untrustworthy, is not a problem with the voting American public. It is weakness and lack of commitment. They took the easy way out. They are as smaller than Gonzales now, because they have given in to him and empowered him to do more damage.
