But i really doubt if Iraq want to align itself with America in future particularly with rising Saudi and Chinese influence in Middle east. King Abdullah is following close partnership with Pakistan in pursuit to forge friendly relations with China and be able to count on it like Pakistan.
Ah, I see your point and I agree. I think our cultures are just too different at this time for our 2 countries to develop anything more than a cool relationship -- perhaps like Morocco & the USA? We have had good relations with Morocco for a long time but not especially close. In my opinion, Morocco is better for it. The influence of American wealth and power, however benign in intent it maybe, is overwhelming for a small country. It's even tough for a large, powerful country with whom we may have a long and fruitful relationship, like France, Italy, and the UK, for example.
In my heart-of-hearts I deplore the MacDonaldization of the planet. 40 years ago or so I was thrilled when I visited a MacDonalds in Greece (IIRC). Now I just shake my head in sorrow for the loss of distinction that allows my culture's icons to overwhelm a host culture.
At the same time, it is better for each individual on the planet for markets to be free and open, even if it means risk to the local culture. Wherever free markets and competition grow, wealth increases and health improves. Where markets are suppressed and controlled the opposite is the rule.
It's a tough, darwinian world out there.
