Face it, there was never anything to win using our military might in Vietnam. We just needed to get the armed forces out to win. The people of Vietnam took care of the winning for themselves. And if we leave Iraq, we can give the Iraqis the same chance. Jim
The conflicts in SE Asia (including Vietnam) were originally borne of the last gasps of European imperialism. We twisted it into something that seemed more sinister. But I agree. There is nothing good that I can project from a victory there, from ensuing engagement in Cambodia to a permanent military presence ala S. Korea to who knows what else.... The best case scenario was to just get the hell out.

Cubans generally eat chicken once in two years. And it is a huge family event. Wedding or something like that. My friends in Miami keep telling me about this.

Cubans have a free healthcare, free education and great beaches.

They also have the concentration camps and huge political prisoners population.

If such a system is implemented here, you might be invited to the nice office for a mere fact you once voted for Reagan. And I am not sure you would leave that office on your own.

However, it was fucking scary when US left Nam.

It looked like the Soviets were winning everywhere.

Had Soviets not invaded Afghan, had Reagan not been elected, had Gorbachev not been able to get on top, we would live in the very different world now.

You really like to fall for all this fear-mongering bullshit, don't you? And good intentions aside, Gorbachev was the USSR's version of Jimmy Carter.

I'm sure this would have been better:

Guatemalan Civil War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Except Jimmy did not destroy his country.

As of fear-mongering BS, I am old enough to remember civil defense lessons and suggested behavior after the nuclear attack.

We all will die eventually, but it is little better not to anticipate it every minute just because some big shots could not decide on dividing some fucking Caribbean island somewhere in the Sargassian Sea.

Jimmy tried his best, but he had a great deal more prosperity to overcome than did Mr. Gorbachev. Have you considered the possibility that the fear you speak of was imposed upon you by our own government, rather than the ones you were told to fear? Other than a little dust-up in 1961, it was mostly smoke and mirrors. At the height of the Soviet empire, they were so badly outmatched and outgunned by us, it wasn't even funny (especially to them).

You got that right. I am not stupid like you who would throw my life away for some politician's wet dreams.

I am amazed that some people are indeed proud of being stupid.

GS, remember that scorpion that have bitten you another night?

(BTW, I hope you are OK and you have found and killed him).

Now, imagine that scorpion five times larger and thousand times more poisonous.

You are the man, you have guns etc and you sure can kill the beast.

But it might be too late after it bites you.
