Several years ago (on a forum far, far away) we discussed proportional voting. Have you got any links for that? I have a colleague with whom I was discussing this (he had never heard of it) and I probably f-ked it all up and would like to get it right.
Thanks,
B

Actually, sorry to say, but I think both Libertarian Party and Other are over-represented, relative to the general public. Independent is clearly under-represented. I vote for Libertarians/Greens/Other quite a bit, but their affiliation/membership is nowhere near this representation, though their respective values are.
My working theory holds that if the structural mechanisms maintaining the two-party duopoly were removed and we moved toward IRV, each of the two "majors" would immediately break into 3 or 4 parties. Voter participation and engagement would increase dramatically. The public could save money by eliminating publicly financed beauty contests...er, primaries(1), and the level of rancor on the airwaves would be reduced measurably(2).
(1) Each of the parties would be required to finance their own caucus, or whatever nominating process they choose. The public shouldn't have to pay the tab for internal processes of a private organization.
(2) Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) would require the candidates to vie for their competitor's backer's second, third and fourth (etc) choice slots, thus reducing their incentive to trash talk and destroy.
Oh hell yeah, that's guy's ahoot. GS got me to take another look at Carlson, whom I suffer just to get to Zeitgeist's portion.
