Holy crap!

Two Phoenix television news choppers just collided and crashed (channels 3 & 15). No details yet, but there couldn't be any survivors......

Here's a pic -- not much detail here either -- from KPHO's site:

KTAR says "at least one" chopper crashed.

Two TV news choppers (apparently ABC and NBC) crashed into each other while following a police pursuit. Two fatalities confirmed so far...

Two helicopters crash while covering chase

01:15 PM Mountain Standard Time on Friday, July 27, 2007

Associated Press Report

PHOENIX (AP) -- Two television news helicopters covering a police pursuit crashed and burned in a central Phoenix park, killing at least two people.

A KTVK TV (3) anchor tearfully told viewers that one of the helicopters was theirs, and that the pilot and photographer aboard were killed. KNXV-TV (15) said the other helicopter was theirs.

The helicopters collided while covering a police pursuit of a man in a construction truck.

The helicopters crashed in flames in a grassy area of Steele Indian School Park.

Channel 15 has the video and audio feed from the chopper, and they're going to broadcast it shortly. They already broadcast a brief audio blurb that went something like this:

"3, we're right on top of you"
"No, we're on top of you."

Looks like five dead. Thankfully, no one on the ground was killed.

Local word is two from 15, identified, and three from 3, not yet identified pending family notification. I have a feeling a story like this may wind up having national ramifications once the FAA does their thing. These choppers went down in an urban area, it was just chance that they happened to be over a large park when they collided. It could have been much worse.

I have often wondered, w/ all those choppers jockeying for the best shot, when their would be a crash. I always figured it would be a news chopper and a police chopper, but am not surprised that this has finally happened. I have to admit it has been a long time coming, and is still a very rare event, but unless they institute better "rules of the road" it will happen again. I just hope they don't overreact and kill all chase videos because I do enjoy a good chase.

It would be easy to cure, if they were really interested. All stations with news choppers agree to share the feed whenever there is a chase. And you're right, it will happen again. In this instance there were at least five helicopters in close proximity following the chase.
