Now this is VERY true. And this from a Thud jockey. I would have thought you would have had an 8 mile gravity solution

That would not be the most accurate solution....
There are much better out there then the old .50 BMG now, stuff accurate out to 2,500 yards and more...

^^^ Ya know, I'm no math major (or majer, for those of you who weren't English majors ) but 1.5 miles is a range in excess of than 2,500 yards...or are you saying that the newer stuff is more accurate than the ol' 50 cal at 2,500, 1.5 and beyond?

No, but from a half mile away it still used to make every hair on my body stand up as the rest of me was trying to find something to crawl under. I could never quite fit completely in my helmet like some of my smaller team members.

Yes, the .50 will give something like 20" or so five shot groups at those ranges with a good shot and an excellent rifle.
The newer .40 somthing caliber knocks that down to 10 to 15" groups........... and I miss quoted the .50, it's around 1 1/4 mile, 2200 yards. The new stuff is 2500+ yards, with better penetration, or so they say.........
