Need help finding a book...

I've been trying to recall any more details but I heard a review and interview with the author of a book, probably a couple of years ago. The author was male, that's about all I recall on that score. I've never read it, made a note at the time which has long since been lost.

The basic book outline is that a guy helps someone unknown to him, who turns out to be a shaman or in the nature of a shaman. In return, the shaman grants the do-gooder an unnaturally long life, perhaps approaching immortality.

The book explores the themes of life and death -- obviously -- and describes the guy's pain as generations of loved ones continue to die -- and he continues to live.

I've spent some time on google and some book and book review sites, can't come up with anything, so I thought I'd pass it by youse folk.

If this book sounds familiar to you, please post up the title or author; I'd much appreciate it.

I will send this to the book buyer at BWI [not the airport]. If anyone would know, she will.

I think it's called The Life and Times of Sir Edmund Picklebury Gigglesnort, but I'm not sure.

For some reason that sounds like a character from a Rowling story...
