The English York became New York, Orleans France became New Orleans and so on..some denote the origin and lack of imagination of their settlers, also sometimes it was a device used as a deliberate notice of staking out of their territory.
Actually, Christchurch NZ was named after the Oxford College, Christ Church, not the Dorset village of the same name.
