I'm not ready to say democracy does not work. I truly believe most of the people in this country are now getting a sick feeling in the pit of their stomach whenever the name George Bush is mentioned. Just look at the numbers: the economy is good, unemployment is in good shape, yet the man can't poll above 32%. Not only that, if you look at the numbers of Republicans in congressional races, they are doing just as bad. I am going to wait and see if all of this translates to the public taking what may be their last chance to right this great wrong that has been done to this country by destroying this iteration of the Republican Party at the polls. If they do not because lies and phony events have manipulated them once again, I may find myself more and more in agreement with you.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
