It depends; if you are starting out always go slow and use moderate weights to control your motion and proper positioning for effective muscle reach. Once competent you can go with higher weights but go SLOW to build up mass.
There is a school of thought which I subscribe to about working out faster but it's dangerous if not done properly. Basically I use weight for aerobic exercise so I don't put that much weight into this fast routine. The motion ofr such a routine must be short bursts until you feel like you are going to explode and your heart starts pumping. The secret is to not take a rest by working the upper body then quicly switch to the lower parts. Don't try it with free weights or you will knock yourself silly... I should know
You have to have a machine and preferably one that has a braking system in case shit goes wrong. Anyway, I use this method if I am not going to have a chance to play outside running or biking, perfect for snow days.
