Z was right to include Glengarry Glen Ross - although it was kind of a movie made from a play, so maybe that's why it didn't count.
Seems like the AFI was after movies which had quotable clips that became part of common speech...dunno why "Black Sheep" or any of the other Farley/Spade movies weren't included, or Happy Gilmore. Odd criterion.
I'm befuddled as to the absence of "Empire of the Sun". That's what movies are supposed to be all about. Not just story, cinematography, and acting - but excellence in all three disciplines.
I still get goosebumps and nearly tear up when Bale is watching the P-51 fly by in slow motion, close enough almost to touch. It's a brilliant movie.
There's plenty of others, but they're all much more subjective. The Big Lebowski, for example. Who cares if it was a comedy.
Empire of the Sun is a massive oversight given that schlock like Tootsie made it. Then again, this is a group of people who were all asked to spare a moment in praise of themselves and one-another...don't expect any hardball decisions here.
