trend goes beyond a mere erosion and loss of hard won civil rights all in the name of "national security" but an unwillingness by Bush/Cheney to listen to any view incongruent to their own, or to be held accountable to the laws.
It is chillingly like the ultimate test to which Richard Nixon put our system of Government to the test in 1973-74, in pursuit of clinging to his personal political power. It could even be argued that "National Security" concerns in part were justifications accepted as valid reasons for the transformation in the Government in Germany in 1933 and the years following.
It is entirely possible that a like Constitutional crisis could ensure before Feb. 2009, as neither Bush nor Cheney are hampered by re-election considerations.
They are constrained only by what the Supreme Court and the legislative branch
can do. Public opinion and the press to the extent they disagree with their policy are of no consequence, and are to be disregarded.
I am of the opinion that President Bush honestly believes his own personal vision of what is good for the country justifies whatever means necessary he could use towards its implementation.
As to Cheney's motives, I frankly can't even begin to guess what they might be, since they are clouded in secrecy, silence and darkness. Money, coprorate agendas and power might figure in them, though.
