Lieberman's Demands for War in Iran are Cowardly

Op-Ed by: Tim King Salem-News.com

Lieberman wants to send our beleaguered military forces into yet another conflict.

(SALEM, Ore.) - February 24th, 1942 is the day the Voice of America began broadcasting. The drive for freedom and unified victory was a national consensus during the Second World War, people were all on the same team.

Something else that came to be on February 24th 1942 that today is certainly a voice in America, perhaps a national phenomenon... Joe Lieberman.

It seems this Independent Senator from Connecticut is often confused about his mission, but his role as the first leading US politician to call out publicly for Americans to bomb Iran over its alleged actions in Iraq is the work of a man whose jaded politics and desires leave little to talk about.

He is a danger to our country. If his rantings were to come to fruition and he edges his nation into yet another conflict, he will not be the one to do this dirty work, it will be your sons and mine.

Lieberman says if Iran won't play by the rules, "we've got to use our force. And to me that would include taking military action to stop them from doing what they're doing."

"This could be achieved mostly with air attacks." Lieberman said.

Some say his views reflect the growing anger and frustration in the administration and military, but everyone knows that the problems surrounding the war in Iraq have continued to spiral out of control for years.

But an unflinching desire on behalf of President Bush to "push on" in a war in Iraq that was poorly executed and has now brought that nation to civil war, only drives others to react, eventually. The biggest problem is that Iran denies what it is being accused of; training Iraqi militants and selling them arms.

"By some estimates, (Iranian-trained Iraqis) have killed as many as 200 American soldiers," Lieberman said.

It seems like once again the false intelligence and rumor mill are churning out little senators that are just full of information.

In the end, it will not benefit anyone if the U.S. aggressively strikes out at Iran. As it is, American soldiers are being corralled behind barbed wire fences when they return from war because the command at Fort Carson, Colorado for example, has concluded that they can not be trusted after combat duty.

But Joe Lieberman wants to send these beleaguered military forces, our American brothers and sisters, into yet another conflict and it is time for people to start figuring out ways to send chickenhawk politicians like Lieberman running from Washington D.C. with their tails between their legs.

This Vietnam War protester is regarded as one of the Senate's leading opponents of violence in video games and on television. So it's OK with Joe Lieberman if we fire up the F-15's and bomb another nation, but don't let the kid see or do anything violent on TV.

It is a ridiculous notion, just like Lieberman's politics. Yes, like anybody else he has done good things, but he is the guy protected by the crowd who keeps lobbing stones to see what kind of a reaction we are going to get. It is a bad time for Joe Lieberman.

Iran denies arming and training Iraqi Shia militia. Mr Lieberman said he had just returned from a tour of the Middle East, including Israel. He accused Iran of backing extremists in Iraq and Lebanon and supporting Hamas attacks against Israel and Palestinian US allies.

But I can tell you from spending time in the Afghanistan War theater that officials like Lieberman never venture into the areas where they would learn anything real. It is all limousines and schedules and security everywhere. Don't believe him when he takes a quick jaunt to the middle east and comes back demanding war.

It reminds me of an elementary school scene where the two guys are circling, fists are raised, but they are still communicating with words, maybe they are friends who had a falling out, maybe they wish a crowd hadn't gathered over their escalating disagreement.

Then here comes an even worse problem than the one at hand; it is the kid that runs up and is the first to yell, "Hit 'em". I've never seen those words not start a fight. If you happen to have grown up in in Stamford, Connecticut, then the name of that kid was probably Joe Lieberman. He's a politician who never learned very much along the way.

Leiberman needs to decide which constituent base he represents, those within the borders of the US or others.

He is the Senator From Israel. I have no problem with it, he represents the most Jewish state in the nation and their views deserve to be represented. But it really is time to stop thinking he represents some kind of mainstream thinking in this country, he represents the Jewish Hawks both here and in Israel.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

How long have I been saying this?
We went to war with Iraq partially for Israel
We are being pushed to go to war with Iran again for Israel
Once we are at war with Iran almost everyone will forget those above two FACTS.
Why don't we just add a star of David with our collection of stars on our flag and stop playing games?

It seems to me we would do better for Israel by helping them obey international laws and being impartial in our representation of them. This fawning and constantly bailing them out and doing their bidding isn't helping Israel or us.

You know the difference between you and a Jew? If a Jew had his Plymouth van stolen, he would drop to his knees and thank the lord.

Drew says "$10??!?!!? Why the hell do you need $5?!?!?!??!"
