I was shocked, but very happy that the injuries were as mild as they were. I thought it was going to be much worse after watching his head bobbing in the cockpit. That 150 perpendicular into the wall reminded me of Senna’s hit. There is much to be said about the way those cars can absorb energy.
Donnelly's crash is pretty much the reason that guys like Kubicka survive. He came of the track at a high speed right hand corner and by the end of the crash there was no car left. All that was on the track was him in the midde of the track still strapped to the seat with cars driving around him.
Horrible. God only knows how he survived. But it did lead to the insistance on safety cells.
The work amazingly. Kenny Brack and Ryan Briscoe had unbelievable wrecks and both survived. Kenny had a long recovery period, though.
Some wrecks are just unsurvivable, unfortunately. Krosnoff at Toronto comes to mind, he basically went airborne and slammed into a bridge abutment sideways, cockpit first. Took out a corner worker at the same time. Very sad.
