I'm fairly certain that I'm not off-base by considering the 60's civil rights movement to be overwhelmingly an effort of and for black Americans.

Either way, the obfuscatory spin firm of Jackson & Sharpton know how to pick a loser. If I was this guy, those two are the last two people on earth I'd want to see.
I don't have to be black to appreciate what Martin Luther King and many others did for US. You see it as a black issue, I see it as an American no more like a human issue that equality is a right for all and not for crackers like you or me only.
If you miss the "good all days" of signs such as "whites only" signs then by all means put the signs in your bathroom door and dinning room and enjoy what you think is your deserved right to feel superior cause there is no returning back to that sort of shit in public.

I'm glad you support it...and that you were old enough to witness or contribute to it? Perhaps you're just a fan of it's outcome. Not sure where I said that I wasn't appreciative of the movement or it's results. Quite the opposite. But it's ludicrous to claim that white people were a significant part of the movement's supporters....if that were the case, the civil rights movement wouldn't have been necessary at all.

As I said, the civil rights movement of the 60's was overwhelmingly an effort of and for black Americans. Lots of different people reaped the benefits, and it definitely needed to be done, but don't bullshit me into thinking that whites and blacks participated in or echoed support for people like MLK equally. Whites were the oppressors - they weren't interested in equality. That was reprehensible. Blacks were the ones being overwhelmingly discriminated against, and blacks took up the charge to fix things. Show me about a famous Asian, or Latino, who was sharing the stage with and mobilizing the same number of their brothers & sisters as MLK.

MLK is the iconic represenation of the civil rights movement for a reason. His race is significant, because his accomplishments as a black man are even more significant when framed by the culture of America 50 years ago.

White people like us have no business latching on to MLK or his accomplishments. We're the reason he did what he did, and not in a good way. We're also the reason he wasn't able to do more.
