Yeah, that's a BIG change from when Repugs were in charge, huh?

If it were the Republicans in charge, you would never know who put the earmark in, ever. At least the Democrats have changed that much - the author of the earmark is now public record.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Oh yeah, vast improvement. Now e know who the jerks are by name rather than merely by party. How about if they just did-away with earmarks altogether?

I wish they'd go back to the line-item veto that the Repug Congress gave Clinton and the SC took away. If that wont work, why not have multiple bills for disparate items? Is that so hard?

The new system fails if the budget is secret, as what Murtha did with earmarks on the intelligence budget. That was clever, wasn't it?

How can one do away with earmarks and why? Congress has the right to pass laws, it can pass any law it likes within the bounds of the Constitution. Ultimately, an earmark is just an amendment to a bill - the abuse has been hiding the author of the amendment. The shenanigans are all about hiding them from the voters and even more, the dreaded media, who might derail the plan of the porker by making fun of it. The voters won this round, because now at least all earmarks have to be identified, and that can be brought up in the course of an election. It is in the very least a step in the right direction.

Earmarks are bribes, and represent the very worst of the good old boys club in Washington. They should be eliminated altogther.

But in the same breath you would say that you are against the public financing of elections. Since the root cause of much of this evil is the constant need to raise funds from lobbyists whose investment return are earmarks, how can you reconcile those positions?

The root cause of corruption is the PERCEIVED need to constantly raise money. Money is not more important than election or re-election. If it comes to that, let the candidate get another job instead of living off the public dole. There are plenty of citizens who could do no worse than the current crop of fatcats and they'd require far less compensation than some asshole who thinks he or she is more important than any other citizen and deserving of a large salary and a huge list of percs. Fuck'em.

OF COURSE I'm adamantly opposed to any public financing of elections. That is a machine for self-perpetuation of a ruling class. I think that the answer to the "problem" of political influence is greater disclosure, not more government supporting itself at my expense.

Let every dime of every contributor be instantly published on the WWW. Let each contributor fully disclose the origin of that dime. If the donor attempts to hide the origin, fine the donor and send her to jail.

If they cannot face that level of scrutiny, they should keep their little dimes in their own little pockets.

^ And ban Congressional earmarks. If the result is less special interest money pouring into the bankrolls of our favorite candidates, all the better to level the playing field.
