WTF is Ford doing to Lincoln?!!

I was just browsing along on autoblog.com and came upon a story about Lincoln's new "flagship", the MKS. While I read this quote, I was just wondering wtf Ford is thinking a flagship luxury car is.

"The MKS will be a Lincoln flagship, boasting a V6 engine mated to a six-speed transmission putting power to the ground via the front wheels."

It's no wonder Fords struggling to compete with foreign makes and even Cadillac whos been making some decent cars lately i must admit. Ford introduces this "flagship" just when Cadillac figured out that the majority of luxury car buyers prefer rwd and having a car thats fun to drive. Sure lately everyones been making powerful V6 engines but you just can't compete when you dont offer a V8.
Anyone else have think Ford's putting themselves out of business with these half ass efforts?

Their best car is the Town Car and no one wants it even though it is bullet proof well past 200k miles. The Navigator is a nice piece that has been restyled in an atrocious manner and has an engine that is outdated. The other shit is too damn ford like to be considered a luxury make.

^^^^^

Ford completely abandoned that sector in the UK several years ago. The largest car here is now the Mondeo. Maybe that is part of the global strategy. The rationale here was that if folks want a luxury car, they will opt for a Benz, BMW or a Lexus. Maybe they feel they can no longer compete with Toyota and are aiming for a different segment of the market.

True, true. First Aston, and now they want to unload Volvo. Volvos are actually decent...I have a V50 and love it.

Rumor has it Ford thought they were also getting the very profitable Volvo truck line when they purchased Volvo awhile back. Nope. Actually Volvo cars are better now than ever. I remember riding in Volvos in the 70's and 80's and remarking what rattle traps they were. I never got in one of those that didn't rattle itself crazy.

I saw this car at the Detroit Auto Show in January [who the Hell puts an International Auto Show in Detroit in JANUARY?!?!?]. It is a nice car but is behind the Caddy by a couple of years as far as design is concerned. The Zephyr [MKZ] seems to be a nice car and on my road trip to NYC and Detroit this past week I saw a bunch on the road. It looked good.

As for the FWD/RWD, most polls suggest that, except for the enthusiast market, most folks don’t really care.

I think that with the new CAFÉ numbers that are going to be mandated pretty soon [as light trucks and SUVs come into the CAFÉ fold] V6 as the main engine option is going to be the rule for everyone. Hopefully Detroit will get a clue and start adding some supercharger/turbo technology to 4s and 6s to provide both performance and economy.
