So free elections are "mob rule"? Spin, spin away.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Your definition of "free" elections has included some pretty farcical shit. Just because a country puts ballot boxes in public places for media consumption does not by any means imply a free election.

When the 'leader' embarks on a blatant and systematic campaign to silence the opposition, you don't really have free elections. It's entirely likely that the results are fabricated to look acceptable to western media and the UN - and that there's no way Chavez would allow himself to be removed from power.

That the Venezuelans would brave almost certain bodily harm and police action to protest the shutdown of the lone broadcaster for the voice of dissent is further testament to their disgust with the corrupt socialist nature of Chavez and his inner circle.

Oh, cut the crap. The vast majority of people in VZ are miserably poor, and they voted for Chavez in droves in internationally supervised elections. So did the people in Brazil and Bolivia. Capitalism has failed these people, and now they are revolting against it, and it is nice to see them doing it with ballot boxes instead of guns. The right wing in South and Central America are a pack of fucking pigs. They have a history of death squads, murder, kidnapping and torture as they perpetrated some of the most despotic regimes in history on some of the poorest people in the world while they stole their countries blind. Fuck them.

Venezuela to sue CNN
Venezuela says it will file charges against US cable network CNN for linking President Hugo Chavez to Al Qaeda.

It says it will also sue a Venezuelan TV network for encouraging Mr Chavez's assassination.

The move comes a day after popular Venezuelan TV network RCTV went off the air after the Chavez Government cancelled its broadcast licence.

Information Minister William Lara has presented what he says is CNN footage displaying pictures of Mr Chavez juxtaposed with those of an Al Qaeda leader.

Mr Lara says CNN also aired a story about the Venezuelan protests but used images taken in Mexico of an unrelated story.

"CNN broadcast a lie which linked President Chavez to violence and murder," he said.

Denial

CNN has issued a statement strongly denying being "engaged in a campaign to discredit or attack Venezuela".

The news network has acknowledged a video mix-up and "aired a detailed correction and expressed regret for the involuntary error".

Regarding the Al Qaeda leader, the network says "unrelated news stories can be juxtaposed in a given program segment just as a newspaper page or a news website may have unconnected stories adjacent to each other".

The Venezuelan Government has also filed charges against local network Globovision for what it says was indirectly encouraging Mr Chavez's murder by airing footage of the 1981 assassination attempt on late pope John Paul II.

"In my view, this television network, in this specific part of its programming, committed the offence of incitement to assassination against the Venezuelan head of state," Mr Lara said.

Protests

The charges come amid protests against Mr Chavez's shutdown of RCTV, a privately-owned broadcaster of popular comedy and drama shows that was boldly critical of the Venezuelan President.

After 54 years on the air, RCTV went black at midnight on Sunday after the Government refused to renew its licence.

It was promptly replaced by TVes, a state-backed socialist station that began broadcasting cultural shows.

On Monday, several people were injured as Caracas police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to put down a demonstration against the RCTV shutdown.

Jimmy Carter is an honorable man and Jimmy Carter said Chavez' election was better than US elections, so it must be true. Jimmy says so and Jimmy is an honorable man. They are all honorable men.

Venezuelan TV station that supported anti-Chavez coup loses its licence

Venezuela's president Hugo Chavez

by Joseph Choonara

Nobody should shed any tears over the refusal of the Venezuelan state to renew the license of the RCTV television station.

The howls of outrage from the right over "freedom of speech" ignore the role the station played in April 2002, when it helped to launch a violent coup against democratically elected president Hugo Chavez.

RCTV helped mobilise supporters of the coup in the streets, falsely claiming that Chavez's supporters were shooting at opposition demonstrators.

The role of the media in precipitating the failed coup was brilliantly exposed in the documentary The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, which showed how RCTV and other private television stations manipulated footage.

RCTV interviewed coup plotters and broadcasted a fabricated resignation letter from Chavez. Far from supporting journalistic freedom, the station suppressed reports of the mobilisations of the poor that defeated the coup and restored Chavez to power.

Chavez is far from being an all-powerful dictator. He has faced countless elections – and his current two thirds approval rating, measured by independent polling companies, would make George Bush and Gordon Brown blush.

There is, however, a question posed by the closure of RCTV. What shape should broadcasting take in Venezuela, in the context of the greatest flourishing of grassroots democracy in the world today?

The choice should not be posed as one between a privately run corporate media and a state controlled media run from the top down.

Instead, the community based radio stations – some of which were born out of revulsion at the role of the media in 2002 – can provide a genuine alternative.

A media based on this model can respond to the rapidly changing needs of the movement from below, while rallying Chavez supporters against moves by the right wing.

This would be the kind of media that best fits with Chavez's declarations of his support for a "socialism of the 21st century".
