Cultural spit swapping. One of my youngest's set pieces for GCSE was 'Catcher in the rye'. Strangely, her exam was today-I will have to call her to see how she got on. Great work IMHO.
Dickens definitely seems to have more significance to adult minds, but in small doses!
'Great expectations' was in fact one of my 'O' level set novels, made highly entertaining by our fearsome English master (known as 'The Gun') adopting appropriate accents and tones for all the various characters. Made him seem almost human, except for the obligatory cap and gown.
