You could tax it and charge licensing fees to the places that sell it (just like a bar having to pay for a liquor license). I see it being a fantastic revenue source for governments. People are already spending the money, so why not bring it up into the above-ground economy? What good could be done with that kind of revenue boost? Schools, roads, health care, whatever. It would also reduce marijuana-related crime, which would be a nice bonus as well.
Moderate alcohol consumption is now widely accepted to have a positive impact on health and longevity and in the case of red wine particular anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties.
However, the tars and toxins from any smoke are proven carcinogens, which is why I do not advocate legalisation or state sanctioned sale and distribution. Freedom of choice is one thing, advocation, irrespective of tax revenues, is quite another.

If you're arguing that marijuana provides a greater detriment to health than alcohol, it's falling on stoned-deaf ears..... Who are you anyway? Sir Osis of Kent?

We were lied to about the evils of Pot many years ago by dogooders who know what is best for us. After hundreds of thousands of people smoked it, and found out that it didn't result in reefer madness then questions were raised about what else we were lied to about. That's the gateway thing -- if pot's not bad then what's the problem with the other stuff?

If your sitting in your own house, then it shouldn't be anybody elses business what your doing, or for that matter with whom you are doing it.

I think marijuana should be treated the same as alcohol. Produce it with a verifiable, and varying, potency like the proof on alcohol. Sell it in a manner where it can be taxed and controlled, again, like alcohol. If someone abuses it and hurts someone (like a drunk driver might) then penalize them in a similar manner there too.

One of the legalization problems might be the increased potency of todays marijuana.
In the Woodstock era, the THC content of marijuana was around .3 %.
The at the time rare Columbian gold had apx. 3 %.
The top hydroponic weed that replaced 'chronic' is called 'skunk' and has up to 15% THC.

A few years ago, I was backstage at a rock concert. On the loading dock, the drummer offered me a hit of what he called 'wheel chair'.
One hit, and you were definitely sitting on your ass.

Met Jimmie Walker a few times. I doubt MJ is his thing, but he sure likes to party.
