NEW BEDFORD— Around 15 youthful protesters assembled outside The Standard-Times building today to protest the newspaper’s coverage of the police crackdown on gang members from the Latin Kings.
Thirty-seven alleged gang members were indicted on various drug charges and 30 were arrested in a sweep that made front page news on Tuesday morning.
The protesters said they were offended by the comparison, which they said they viewed as an ethnic slur.
They assembled around noontime alongside Route 18 at the corner of Elm Street, displaying homemade signs accusing the newspaper of institutional racism.
“When you write a headline calling people cockroaches you are creating more of a rift in the city between people of color and people of privilege,” protester Stanley Dominique said.
“We feel badly people were offended,” said Standard-Times Editor Bob Unger. “But we were quoting the head of the neighborhood association in the section of the city where members of this gang operate. Mr. Resendes was not talking about an ethnic group. He was talking about drug dealers who move from street corner to street corner. That is a very important distinction.”
I think these kids need to learn how to read.
