Key-rrhast, boyz & gurls!
Evolution is not a belief system. As a scientific theory, it is a product of deductive reasoning concerning observed facts of nature. It is a tool for explaining the natural world. People, do you, "believe in hammer"? That's as ludicrous a statement as to, "believe in evolution." Heck, it isn't even on parity with a hammer. It's more like, "do you believe in steel"?
Some people choose to believe in the literal word of God from this or that holy text. there is no possible way that any amount of deductive argument will ever persuade anybody who believes in holy written word of God that anything contrary could possibly be true. Those folks believe that Pope John Paul's encyclical, "Fides et ratio" (if they've ever heard of it) is a Satanic influenced text designed to undermine God's holy word. Those people are wasting their time on you and me when they try to make us understand the truth of God's revealed holy word. It shouldn't be a great stretch to realize that our effect on them is greeted with equal scorn.
By arguing so strenuously and caustically against any theistic beliefs, we run the risk of alienating good, honest, open-minded people who are faithful believers in their God or gods. Why alienate potential colleagues through dismissal of their sacred beliefs? That's an f-ing stupid strategy. Instead, STFU about their beliefs: Dwell on the value and utility of science and let them attribute it to God if they want to. Let them tell you that science is a tool given to man by God Almighty in order to understand His Creation more fully, thereby glorifying God. Shoot, much better men of science than any of us will ever be had no problem with that strategy. Including Bacon, Leibniz, Newton, Franklin, and Einstein. Sure, there are many atheists that are fine scientists. More power to them. I would argue that the best scientists are those who pursue the truth without the need for disparaging others.
