That's funny. I wasn't sure if it was him so I googled part of the quote and got hundreds of hits, with most of them pages like "Churchill quotes" etc. Never even got to the churchill centre site.

Thanks for the correction, but Winston or not, it's still my favorite quote along these lines.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

Someone please explain it to me.
In a nutshell, I think the less materialistic people become, the less likely they will be Republicans.

I was actually pretty conservative until I did a college internship at a private social services company that served the homeless in the Boston area. I swept the floor and served food in the soup line, and found out that the poor were not some monolithic block of welfare chiselers, which is how they had always been presented to me as by the Republicans I knew.

The first thing I found out was that poor people, no matter what choices they made that made them poor, had kids who were miserbly poor by no choice of their own. It is society's duty to see to it that these innocents are fed decently and that they get decent medical care, and that they have clothes on their back, and are given every educational opportunity so they can have a chance in this world. I am a Democrat more because of this class of people than for any other reason. The next thing I found out is that many of the poor are mentally ill, or confused, shell shocked poor elderly, who deserve the same compassion.

Of course, I also found that there is a lot of poor people who are just fucking bums, but surprisingly, many of them do not collect welfare or receive much more than what they can get to eat from churches, mainly because they are too drunk or high to fill out the paperwork or are unable to meet the residency requirements for food stamps, etc. Their main source of income is begging and petty crime. Another GOP urban legend was bust.

Another factor, quite frankly, was my agnosticism. I came to believe that the odds of a God who would provide a heaven for the poor in the next life, were slim, and that what we see is what we get, a fairly short life span. In turn I came to believe that reserving all the great mass of wealth this country posseses for 1% of the people, who are the ones who are in charge of the GOP, is simply wrong. They have a moral obligation to help those who are unable to help themselves even if we have to force the greedy fuckers to do it by threat of prison. If there is no heaven, than life on earth should be made as bearable as possible for as many people as possible. A minimum wage, a minimum level of health care and a maximum amount of education covers that for me, and you will never see any "I got mine" Republican advocate any of it.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

It was probably Kipling (uh, oh -- I'm gonna get yelled at again).

By "others" you mean you?

So far you've made two half-useful posts in this thread.

I am still watching. And you are not on Ignore. For now.
