2. No experience so I don't know - I can tell you all about surviving on $10 a day ($25 would be today's going rate) backpacking through Europe.

3. Don't forget Ireland. As a point of interest, Sweden used to drive on the left side too but made a switch in 1967. Their train system, however, remain on the left side.

4. I'd defer to others' suggenstions

Note: just so that you know... you can't drive into Central Venice so if you have a romantic notion of snapping a photo of an exotic rental parked on Piazza San Marco, just forget it.

what was this all about?

no romantic notions just trying to have a nice drive to venice to see the sights.

They are a great bunch of guys. I visit it everytime I am in Chicago, mostly to check out his stock of Lotus'. It is actually in Downer's Grove, not Lombard. I would give the name of my friend over there but then he would be assasinated by right wing nut jobs who troll this website. I think they are actually Bentley dealers but he deals in everything high end.

Although it's been 20 years, the thing that sticks in my mind was the heightened level of awareness that had to be maintained when driving in Europe (Germany). You really had to know where to put the car at any given moment as the twisty two lane roads required a mastery of the 'center stripe passing manuver'. A car overtaking you expects you to know he is there. Oncoming traffic must move halfway onto their right shoulder. You are expected to steer halfway onto your right shoulder to allow him to pass you on the left, so he won't have to go completely into the opposite traffic lane, thereby creating a temporary 3 lane road where only a 2 lane existed. Likewise, a car passing another as it approaches you from the opposite direction expects you to slide over.

Haben ze das notig? (or something similar)

THAT took some getting used to!

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Your Benz is 10 years old. Why not log onto MBUSA and order a new Benz Euro Delivery. Pick it up at the factory and tour Europe in your own car.

If I was going to do an exotic trip to Europe, I'd do it on my Sportster. I've heard the frauleins go crazy over big American hogs.
