Bush Won't Accept Iraq War Timetable

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush, standing firmly against a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, said Tuesday that he will veto the latest war spending bill approved by Congress.

"I'm disappointed that the Democratic leadership has chosen this course," Bush said.
"They chose to make a political statement," he said. "That's their right but it is wrong for our troops and it's wrong for our country. To accept the bill proposed by the Democratic leadership would be to accept a policy that directly contradicts the judgment of our military commanders."
House and Senate Democratic appropriators agreed Monday on a $124 billion bill that would fund the Iraq war but order troops to begin leaving by Oct. 1 with the goal of completing the pullout six months later. Democrats would need a two-thirds majority to override a presidential veto.
Democrats said they won't back down and pointed to past remarks by Gen. David Petraeus, the new Iraq commander, that security in Iraq requires a political solution.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who says the war in Iraq is "lost," likened Bush to President Lyndon Johnson, saying Johnson ordered troop escalations in Vietnam in an attempt "to save his political legacy" only to watch U.S. casualties climb steadily.

Bush still lives in la-la land. It is not "the Democrats" who have asked for this, it is the American People. Read any poll. Look at the last election. The US electorate sees the reality of this ridiculous war better than Bush or right wing nut jobs ever will. The idea that we need to spend billions in Iraq to set up an American-run police state so this place can be come peaceful is 1) an idiotic idea in a land where people have been killing each other for centuries and 2) just something neither the American Elecorate or the Congress never signed on for. The entire purpose of this is to put Bush on record as being opposed to the will of the American people, so that the people will see clearly who it is that is blocking a solution to the mess in Iraq, a small group of right wing fascists who wish to impose their will on the people of this country. Now, at every press conference and in every hearing, it will be a fact, and he will be asked WHY? In Nov 2008, if this war is still in progress due these obstructionist tactics, the entire Republican Party will be destroyed at the polls for a generation. Let it happen. Veto away.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

When the Iraq Study Group recommendations were made, and the President instead opted for the troop surge, in my mind, at that moment he personally assumed the responsibility for the direction of the war. He will never, never divert from his view. Any change towards ddisengagement from this mess in Iraq will come after he leaves office.

This is eerily parallel in many ways to vietnam, circa 1968.

The whole point of this exercise is so that America as a nation comes to this conclusion. Once it becomes apparent to a majority, a point I already think has been reached, then the funding for the war can be restructured in a way that forces an end to this. Bush is a butcher, a man of small intellect and great pride, a killer unworthy to lead this nation. How many at this point would disagree with that assessment?

He personally and proudly assumed full responsibility for the war on terror the day after 9/11! He will not and should not deviate from our strategy to win the war. Thank God someone has the spine to do what needs to be done.
