In Gonzales defense, allow me to offer that the man does know how to take a beating.

Could the firing be related to this story?

I am finally getting a chance to watch it on CSPAN2 right now. Pummelled is a good word. So far I have to give Feinstein the nod as the most devastating cross-examination. Specter really tore him a new asshole. I simply cannot see how this utter buffoon can stay in office. Contradictory, fumbling for an answer, trying to be on both sides of the question, man the guy looked bad.

The reasons for all of this is becoming obvious. What was actually going on was a plan by Rove to rig the next election by placing in swing states men who were going to prosecute phony, trumped up voter fraud cases in order to scare minority voters from the polls. It is a national expansion of what they did in Florida in 2000. That is what they are trying to hide, and that is why the go-between between Gonzo and Rove is taking the Fifth. Conspiring to rig an election would be a very, very big deal. This whole thing is just the tip of a really nasty iceberg. Anyone who knows anything about Texas politics will tell you that a plan like that is classic Rove.

Oh, it was absolutely brutal. Specter wanted his head on a pike, as did several others...

I think a lot of them got burned because they failed to catch the fine print in the Patriot Act that took Senate Confirmation out of the appointment process for USA's. Judiciary committee members in the past could virtually appoint the USA in their district by threatening the withholding of confirmation votes. It was extremely valuable to Senators, being able to put a pal in to look the other way when necessary, and it also gave them a plum to negotiate with with other Senators who were not on the JC, swapping a vote for a USA for political favors. I think Gonzo and Rove stepped on what these Senator's saw as their perogative to ok hirings and veto firings, and are pissed the Executive branch, now that they have taken the Senate's confirmation power away, was playing politics with what used to be the Senator's pawns. Spector, who depending on the ebb and flow of Senate majorities is at the very least always the second most powerful man on the Committee, in the old days as Chairman, he could veto any USA simply by not scheduling hearings on the nominee. Well, they took that power away from him, and then, even worse, they used it after stealing it from him. I think the plan is for them all to crucify Gonzo, no matter what the party (except for that hopeless stooge Orin Hack, er, Hatch) , which will be followed by a bill to restore Senate confirmation rights over USAs, with Bush pushed into a corner, unable to veto a bill that will now look like a response to the now-perceived-as-corrupt Gonzo. I love it.

Yeah, that doesn't appear to be the case in AZ. Apparently, the firing was the result of an investigation regarding GOP Representative Rick Renzi.

Quote:
Republican Rick Renzi raided by FBI

Phoenix, Arizona - Republican Rick Renzi's family business was raided by the FBI in connection with an ongoing federal investigation.

Renzi was forced to step down temporarily from the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday.

The Arizona Republican said in a statement issued late Thursday night that the FBI took several documents.

"I view these actions as the first step in bringing out the truth," he said.

"Until this matter is resolved, I will take a leave of absence from the House Intelligence Committee. I intend to fully cooperate with this investigation."

The Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, said agents went to the Patriot Insurance Agency in Sonoita. In a financial-disclosure statement filed last May, Renzi reported that his wife, Roberta, owned the agency. He valued the business at $1 million to $5 million.

According to the Arizona Republic newspaper, the Justice Department has been investigating Renzi for months, but the subject of the inquiry has never been made public.
