We have some of the strictest gun legislation in the world, but yet gun crime is on an unprecedented rise. Accordingly, the majority of this crime is carried out with illegal weapons of some sort or another. For me to obtain (in fact maintain) my legal s/s 12 gauge I have to jump through hoops that would try the patience of Job. However, despite not 'knowing' any specialists, I would lay odds I could obtain a handgun (totally outlawed in ther UK) within 24 hours in London for less than $1000. If I ran in criminal circles then it wouldn't need a second thought.

Anyway, the point I really wanted to make is that like with drugs and terrorism, the legislation comes from politicians reacting to the perception of the problem to garner popularity and rarely has much effect on the problem itself.

I have seen no news reports yet on sawed-off serial numbers. Where exactly are you getting that from?
Try reading the Washington Post page 2 of this link

Now considering your statement above about these back alley guns being a myth, why would he have 2 guns with no serial numbers? Are you sure you live in Houston?

We shall see as time goes on whether that report holds up.

I go to gun shows all the time in Houston. The most ubiqutous customer at a Houston gun show is a Houston gang member.

Maybe you are correct, here is an excerpt from this aritcle, seems he had reciepts for the Glock

At this time, police are not looking for a second shooter, however, they did not rule out the possibility that an accomplice may have been involved. Sources say Cho was carrying a backpack that contained receipts for a March purchase of a Glock 9 mm pistol. Witnesses had told authorities that the shooter was carrying a backpack. Police also said this morning that Cho had a .22 caliber pistol. Sections of chain similar to those used to lock the main doors at Norris Hall, the site of the second shooting that left 31 dead, were also found inside a Virginia Tech dormitory, sources confirmed to ABC News.

I was listening to the news this morning and they said that in his backpack there was a receipt for his gun purchase in March. Which back alley would supply a receipt, I want to know so I can buy one and deduct it from my taxes. As a professor I think I should pack, like FTL said, it's an arms race

It was propably a receipt for the different gun purchase. Receipts are not issued for the guns with no serial numbers AFAIK.

You definitely should participate in the arm's race.

I suggest Uzi or even better, AKM-47.

"Professor" is becaming one of the most dangerous occupations.

Why would you want to buy it from the back alley?

OK, killer's last name was Hui.

Those of you who speak Russian know what it means in Russian.

You really believe that, don't you? It must really be boring in your little enclave.
