Sorry to bust your bubble, but the Federal law REQUIRES that a background check be made for ALL new, and ALL commercial firearms sales. This nut job most likely had no record when he bought the two 9mm autoloaders he apparently had. Clearly this was a planned operation, because even with high capacity pistols he had to reload more the once for each gun.
Virginia has a "shall issue" concealed carry law, if ANY of the instructors or professors had CCW a weapon, it's highly likely that the death toll would have been much lower.
It's a very sad event, but there is no way you can blame the guns... think of the result if this crazy had used Molotov cocktails, or pipe bombs instead...........
The strictest gun laws in the United States are in New York and Washington, DC check the stats on firearms deaths in those cities. It's an old saw, but it's still true: When you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have them.
As a side note, aren't some of the "Bobbys" in London carring firearms now? Seems to me the laws in England are just as strict as they are in NZ.......
