He was a white guy that made a racial slur. Jesse Jackson can get away with 'heimy town' because he's black.
White people have to endure racial slurs such as 'white cracker', white bread', 'honky', southern red-neck, yankee doodle noodle and such. I say all is fair, but apparently, the Imus is going to lose his job for it while Jackson gets to racial slur away. Hypocritical bastard.

What he said wan't out of anger, or a reaction to false information. His relaxed conversation about those "nappy-haired jigaboo ho's" reveals his cultural point of view. To him, the African American community is an abstract concept with which he is not engaged.
And it is really pathetic to see him back-pedal. To me it looked basically like he was begging Jesse Jackson for 5 more years on the radio if he got a black side-kick.
