Has anyone owned/hired/driven one of these?

My friend has one so occasionally I get to drive it when he gets really shit faced at the bar. Nothing special about it if you want my honest opinion. My Audi TT has a better feel to it....

I have AutoXed one a couple of years ago that belonged to a friend. I think it does very well. VERY strong. I was not pleased with the economy. I think they could have done better with that. If I were looking for something in that range I think I would go with the Nissan Z Car. Same performance with better road manners and economy when you are not honking on it.

A Nissan Z can keep up with an RX8? Color me skeptical.

The reason I wondered about first-hand experiences of the RX8 is that when 'Top Gear' tested it, they were unusually flattering considering it's just what you guys would call a 'ricer'. I will probably go back to plan 'A' and find a clean 129 at some stage, but with fuel at $8 per gallon here I'm losing the enthusiasm!

Rotaries are great but I would not use an Rx8 as a commuter car. My Rx7 stays in the garage and I only use it occasionally or when my wife wants a thrill on winding roads.
Unlike the Rx7, the Rx8 has back seats so it's a little more practical if you are hauling a bunch of friends.
The only thing I don't like about the Rx7 is its exterior looks. It does not inspire me since and actually looks like it is trying too hard to look stupid. The best Rx7 body style is the gen 3 but it's an unreliable car; Gen 2 are becoming classics but they look like a forged 944; Gen 1 are nice and original but I would worry about finding sound ones.
If it's a weekend car you're looking for get a used Rx7 and restore it. I would get a gen3 shell and make sure to plant a non-turbo engine in it, maybe get a 13B meant for a gen2.

I test drove a new RX-8 before buying the SLK32. It's fun to drive, in that it likes being kept high in the RPM band and handles exceptionally well. It's power curve is fairly sharp though, so it ultimately lost points on that.

On the handling, it honestly takes some getting used to - very little steering input was needed to hug the white line on a tight off-ramp at 85 MPH. It's kind of like my Golden Retriever when he was more of a puppy - VERY eager to do what it's told.

Sadly, I liked the RX-7 body better (the last one, right before the RX-8), but I can at least fit in the RX-8 at 6'5".

Ultimately, it was the lack of a convertible option that did it in for me. It was pure luck to find the SLK32.

If you are really interested in a RX8, you would be better served to drive a S2000, that is if you fit in it. If you don't then a Z car is possible, but remember Nissan is run by the French, quality has gone down the tubes but people have not realized it yet. SLK is always great if you can tolerate the new nose; Z4 too ugly to mention; Boxster a good choice but I have never had much luck in the reliability department with Porsche. If you were in N America a '05 or above Corvette would probably suprise the ever living hell out of you, it is now a real contender, and can fit large frames.
